Lighting Basics:
Lighting can be split into four basic categories: task, accent, ambient, and decorative lighting.
Task lighting: bright lighting in a particular area for an activity such as reading, sewing or preparing food. Task lighting is often achieved by means of individual fixtures that direct a tight pattern of light onto the work surface.
Accent lighting: similar to task lighting it is used to focus attention on artwork, to highlight architectural features, to set a mood, or to provide a sense of drama.
Ambient lighting: with ambient lighting the undefined areas of a room are filled with a soft level of general light - enough, for example, to watch TV or walk through the room. An ambient glow makes a room more inviting and helps people look their best by softening the harsh shadows created by stronger light sources.
Decorative lighting: these fixtures draw attention to themselves as objects. Examples of decorative lighting are chandeliers, low-voltage pendant fixtures, neon. strip lights and fiber optics.
